This month’s Friends of Uplands Park bird walk is coming up on Friday, September 29th. We will meet in the main parking lot in front of the kiosks at Cattle Point. Please note the later start time of 9:00am.
The plan is to get to the meadow near Dorset Rd around 11:00 for a hawk watch. Late September and early October is the peak period for migrating raptors on Southern Vancouver Island. Uplands Park is often the best spot within the city to view this unique spectacle.
We can expect to see “kettles” of Turkey Vultures with some Red-tailed Hawks, Sharp-shinned Hawks, and other species soaring overhead. Less common possibilities include Broad-winged Hawk, Swainson’s Hawk, and American Goshawk. Other migrants on our target list are Vaux’s Swifts, Band-tailed Pigeons, Savannah Sparrows, and American Pipits. We could find rarer birds such as Black Swift, Horned Lark, and Lapland Longspur.
