White Pelicans (G. Newell)

“This month’s FOUP bird walk will take place on Sunday, June 25th. We will meet and begin in the main parking lot at Cattle Point at 8:00 a.m. June is an interesting time of year for birding in the Victoria area. Most of our spring migrants have already come through but lingering migrants, including mid-class and high-class rarities, are appearing all over the region. Some of these birds are choosing to land, rest, and refuel in our beloved Garry Oak meadows like in Uplands Park.

Ovenbird (G. Newell)

On June 11th, I found an Ovenbird singing in the park’s northwest section. This marked the 2nd record for Uplands Park and the 7th or 8th ever for Vancouver Island. This species of warbler is normally found east of the Rocky Mountains so it’s very special to find one anywhere on the west coast. A couple of other rarities that have turned up in Uplands Park this June are a flyover flock of American White Pelicans and an Eastern Kingbird. Let’s see what feathered friends we can find on this month’s bird walk!”
